3 Things I learned in Kingston

Hello from Kingston. This is the town I will be moving to in a few months. Donna lives here and I thought it would be nice to go and visit her during my Spring Break. What a fantastic idea that was. I was getting pretty burned out and it gave me something to look forward to. The kids at school were getting antsy as well, and since it was nearing the end of term, everyone was doing their best to complete last minute assignments. Teachers everywhere know how that goes.

Anyway, Kingston has been good. The weather has been cold, but not too too bad, only to minus 7 or 10 at night. The wind is pretty chilly though. The days have been good. Mostly sun, although it snowed the first day I got in. Which reminds me that Air Canada's service sucks and needs to be revisited by whatever meat-head is in charge over there. They changed the boarding gate of my connecting flight into Kingston twice and both times neglected to mention they were doing it. I mean that's pretty mickey mouse. If you are going to disrupt things, then at least notify the people who it effects.

The first thing I learned in Kingston was that I missed Donna a lot. It was sooo nice to see her again. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Its been great these last couple of days just hanging out and being in her company. Makes you think about how I take her for granted sometimes. She still insists on taking up too much of the bed, but that's another story.

The second thing I learned in Kingston is that Bodypump is so good and so bad. Donna has been going to the gym pretty religiously for the last little while, and said we were going on Saturday. I said fine. She wakes me up at 8:30 local time (I just finished the red-eye the night before AND that's 5:30 my time) and I am a little tired an groggy. No problem, we go to the gym early because she wants to run for a while before the class. My knees been a bit wonky lately, so I ride the bike hard for an hour, doing hills, thinking that this class is going to be pretty easy, since its mostly women lifting small weights. Donna forewarns me that I should start small because lots of guys take bigger weights and then can't finish their sets. I haven't lifted weights, but I seem to think I am pretty strong and sets can't be that many... I figure 3 sets of 12 or 15 max. So we get the class started by going and picking up our own weight sets and the instructor comes in. We do some stretching and get started. Turns out that there aren't really any sets per say, just slower and faster reps of a certain exercise while music plays and she checks out that you are doing everything right. It was really, really really hard. I had started with medium sized weights and quickly dropped to smaller weights. The instructor was half my size, so my ego wouldn't let me use smaller weights than she used. It was one of the hardest workouts I had ever done, way worse than fitness and conditioning stuff at practise. I am totally out of shape. And today (the day after Bodypump) I can barely move. All my muscles ache, especially my biceps, triceps and quads. It hurts to do anything.

The third thing I learned was that I am smarter than Donna. Not just a little bit smarter, a heck-of-a-lot smarter. Donna insisted on doing the "Test the Nation" IQ test on TV last night. I argue no, its not a good idea, we should watch a movie. I do this because if I win she is gonna be pissed, and I don't really want to lose either. And I think I am gonna win. Sure enough, we do the test, which takes bloody hours, and it turns out my IQ is 30 points higher than hers. And she is a pretty bright girl who managed to get into med school, then do well enough there to get into a very competitive specialty. I guess I could rule the world if I really wanted to.
